The first time, fellow WNBC jock Don Imus does it to Stern. Twice in "Private Parts," a character slams a door in another character's face with an emphatic exclamation involving the F-word. " A guy who built everything on spontaneous riffs does two hours from a script and this is supposed to be the real story? Irony, anyone? 4) If your target demographic is men 18-34, don't stint on gratuitous nudity. "Private Parts" has no real villain until Stern reaches WNBC and meets program director Pig Vomit, a foul-mouthed weasel who tries to humiliate and break our hero. 2) The villain is as important as the hero.

Stern keeps them around and uses them, which is one reason he made $17 million last year. Most people meet these characters, shake their heads and forget them. When he gets a job, he finds small-time bosses with weird obsessions and glad-handing, oily businessmen. He starts with loving-but-idiosyncratic parents. Stern's life has been populated by the same people everyone meets annoying but unremarkable obstacles to the pursuit of happiness. 1) Comedy is real life replayed in slow motion with the volume turned up and the picture enlarged. But in the end, "Private Parts" just doesn't have the time for that sort of thing realizing, no doubt wisely, that in Hollywood as in love, certain fundamental things always apply. Since Stern has repeatedly said he wants "Private Parts" to show the world how wonderful Alison has been, it's too bad the viewer leaves knowing nothing more about her.

The movie, alas, relies on a series of brief encounters that play like, well, movie scenes. In his original "Private Parts" book, Stern made that story far richer by recounting small details that suggest their intense private bond. Even the love story between Stern and his wife, Alison, a heartwarming subplot that pushes "Private Parts" toward "Rocky on the Radio," is thinly drawn. Everyone else, including A-list good guys like sidekick Robin Quivers, is a cardboard cutout, a backboard for Stern to bounce off. If viewers find a deeper Howard Stern, though, it's largely because he's surrounded by characters with no depth at all.

At times it's quite funny, and Stern comes across as comfortably likeable Rocky for geeks, a radio Everyman who meets and beats the kind of jerks encountered by everyone who ever had a boss. And what will propel them to this harmonious state? Well, "Private Parts" is a breezy, fast-paced flick that never dwells long enough on any scene or thought to tax the slowest-moving Howard fan. Involuntary tears of happiness may trickle down their cheeks. The movie's challenge is to make those fringe people come away from "Private Parts" thinking they saw a different Howard Stern. But to become more than a big cult hit, the film must also attract fringe people who previously knew Stern only by the dubious shock-jock tag. Fans of the popular morning radio host will flock to see it, because they would watch him lick stamps for two hours. That's one of the theories behind the movie version of "Private Parts," the Howard Stern bio that opened Friday. But in a world of one-dimensional characters, the two-dimensional man can be king. A two-dimensional man is not a fully fleshed-out person.
